Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus presented with the 2019 Global Women’s Leadership Award at The Global Summit of Women in Basel, Switzerland

Professor Yunus received the Award on 5th July for his internationally recognized work in poverty alleviation and economic empowerment of women globally through his pioneering work of microfinance and social business.  Millions of poor women around the world found their inner capacity to take up entrepreneurial activities to generate income and establish their economic freedom and individual dignity. The Global Summit of Women is a project of the Global Women Research and Education Institute, an organization based in Washington, DC, USA. it promotes the acceleration of women’s economic opportunities globally. This is done through research and exchanges of best practices advancing the economic progress of women and girls from start-ups to corporate leadership in all parts of the world.

Over 1,200 leaders in business and government from 65 countries around the world attended this year's premier business and economic forum for women which have been taking place for the last 29 years. The theme of this year’s summit was “Women: Redefining Success”.

The Global Summit of Women was conceived as the nexus at which all sectors – public, private and nonprofit – would come together under the common vision of dramatically expanding women’s economic opportunities globally through exchanges of working solutions and creative strategies forged by women leaders from different parts of the world.  It is a business summit, whose ‘business’ focus is women’s advancement in the global economy.

The summit featured pre-summit round table for Women Government Ministers on best practices in public/private sector partnerships for advancing women’s economic opportunities; plenary sessions which cover regional and global mega trends that impact economies around the world; discussion forums with male CEOs and women CEOs as well as strategic direction from women entrepreneurs succeeding in the global economy. There were also skills-building sessions in three tracks: Leadership Development, Entrepreneurial, and Issues.

The 2019 Summit has 9 global members including the International Federation of Business and Professional Women and the Women’s Presidents Organization (USA) and more than 60 international partners that include national trade and commerce associations from all over the world.
